MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G – MSI’s Flagship Maxwell Model Makes Its Debut!

Our Final Thoughts

When Maxwell launched I knew MSI would have its own special flavor but to say I expected this would be a lie. MSI simply knocked it out of the park with both the 970 and 980 cards as both run virtually silent on an open test bench right next to my head even under heavier extended loading. The GPU temps were nothing even close to warm which means plenty of room to push the clock while still staying plenty cool and not having to ramp the fan much if at all.

Gaming performance is off the charts literally or at least top of the charts easily besting the best cards around for the time being and that’s no easy task.

Value as in what you get for your money, well its no more than other competitors out there and even less than quite a few so value is great especially when you consider the performance and quiet you get.

All in all MSI made probably one of the best gaming cards on the market and anyone in the market for a 980 Level card would be insane not to consider the MSI Gaming model as it does its job and does it very well!

Pros Cons
  • Headroom above the out of the box clock
  • excellent cooling performance
  • strong build components
  • super silent
  • low power usage
  •  Nothing

For a long time the combination Intel/Nvidia was the norm for powerful gaming laptops.  AMD has tried to break in to the market but not had much success. The laptop I am looking at today, ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15, is another challenger to the old partnership. It comes with AMD:s latest mobile part, the Ryzen 7 4800HS combined with a Nvidia RTX2060 Max-Q, all packed into a nice slim laptop with a 15" 240 Hz 1080P IPS-screen.
