Final Thoughts

We have seen the Asus Strix R9 390X Gaming 8G OC and it’s good, really good. Like any other product we saw a couple of things we weren’t thrilled with, limited OCing and a fan blade tip extending past the cowling but those are easy to overlook once you settle in with the card and get to know it. We don’t care if it’s a rehash of the R9 290X the improvements make it an attractive card in a good price range.

Here’s the kicker with the Asus Strix R9 390X Gaming 8G OC, it’s a card built for higher resolutions and at lower resolutions some cards might produce better FPS but increase the resolution and the Strix R9 390X will compete with and in cases beat the GTX 980. We had to borrow a GTX 980 to bench with the R9 390X and in several cases the R9 390X beat the GTX 980 at higher resolutions. Refresh or not its got 8GB of GDDR5, competes well with other cards at its price point and is packed with Asus exclusive technology. DirectCU III with full length heat sink and cooling fins produced a relative quiet gaming experience but kicking the fans manually to 100% got noisy. Gaming at under 65°C and the fans just stop and that’s a feature we really like.

The 8 Gigabytes of GDDR5 running across a 512-bit bus sure didn’t hurt our feelings any even though it most probably is a bit overkill. The more resolution we fed the Asus Strix R9 390X Gaming 8G OC the happier it got and the farther it pulled away from cards with a narrower bus or with less memory.

We like the Asus Strix R9 390X Gaming, we like the DirectX 12 capability, the quality, performance and styling. You pack that much power into one cowling and you get a card that’s hard not to love. Look around at 8 Gigabyte GDDR5 cards and see what the prices on those puppies look like. Asus partnered with AMD and produced an 8GB card that’s a lot more affordable than some of the other 8GB cards. Believe us when we tell you the going currency for higher resolutions is GDDR5 memory and more is better. The Asus Strix R9 390X Gaming 8G OC has tomorrows memory amount and has it today.
