INTRODUCTION
No serious computer nerd should be without a wide range of tools. We need our screwdrivers, our box with tons of different screws and of course a flashlight that allows us to see into the most hidden crevices in our computer. HIS is usually a company known for their AMD-based video cards but lately they also have started selling gaming accessories like the nice multitool which is included in some of their cards but also can be bought separately.
Today we take a look at an interesting LED flashlight from HIS, the HIS Rechargeable Solar LED Flashlight, that is completely solar powered and that comes with 5 LED-lamps to give us that extra strong light when we need it.
THE SPECIFICATIONS
The HIS LED flashlight has the following specifications and features.
Number of LED lights: 5
Solar power: 0.15W
Built in battery: 400mA Li-Poly rechargeable battery
Charging time: 6 hours
Body material: Aluminum
Size: 123×24mm
Weight: 64g
Features:
Brighter: 5 powerful LED lights that are brighter than any traditional flashlight
Greener: Solar panel offers up to 5 hours of illumination when fully charged
Economical: Rechargeable battery results in money saving as you do not need batteries
The idea of not having to care about batteries is something that sounds like an excellent idea. To often have we needed our flashlight just to find out that the battery is either very weak or empty.
CLOSER LOOK
The flashlight comes in a neat little box that has all that has all the info you need about the flashlight written on it. When we remove the outer paper around the box we actually find a very nice black box that, if it didn’t have HIS written on it, would be a nice box for gifts.
When we open the black box we find yet another container, this time a rounded black white container that has a leathery exterior. It is quite fascinating how much effort HIS has placed on the packaging.
When we first got the package we envisioned this to be a small flashlight but it turns out it is a lot bigger than we thought. It has a length of 12.3 cm (4.8 inches) and a diameter of 2.4 cm (0.9 inches). Since it is quite big you would think it is quite heavy but since it is made out of aluminum it actually is very light.
Toghether with the flashlight we also get 2 straps.
At the front of the flashlight we see the 5 LED-lights that provide the light.
Â
On the other side of the flashlight we find the solar panel. This recharges the flashlight during the day via direct light and it takes about 6 hours to fully charge the flashlight. The easiest way to ensure that you always have a recharged battery is to leave it out and not leave it inside the leathery container.
At the back we find a button that turns the flashlight on/off. It is hidden behind a rubber seal that makes sure that no moisture or dirt can get into the flashlight from that end. The rest of the flashlight is completely sealed and this should make it watertight. We of course had to try this and put the flashlight under running water while it was on for 30 minutes or so and so far cannot see any water that has leaked in by the solar panel. The flashlight still works fine also. HIS does not actually say anything about it being watertight but as long as you do not swim with it (and maybe even then) it should work fine in rain or in an environment with lots of dirt (behind the computer with all the dust rats) .
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The 5 lamps do a great job in lighting up the surroundings including the darkest corners of a computer case. Since it is hard to show you how the light works with still images we recorded a video with our Kodak Zx1.
We turned the light off in the room and then let the camera film while we turned on/off the light.
As you can see the flashlight has no problems even when used in complete darkness. It easily lights the environment up so you can see whatever you want to see.

CONCLUSION
The HIS Rechargeable Solar LED Flashlight is a great tool for every serious computer user that routinely needs to open/poke inside the computer case. The 5 LED lights are powerful enough to light up even the darkest corners of your computer case and even powerful to use outside the computer. It is nice to know that as long as we remember to leave the flashlight outside so it can recharge automatically that we do not having to care about batteries anymore. It would however have been nice with some sort of indicator showing how charged the battery actually is.
At the moment of writing the flashlight cannot be found on any e-tailers but HIS told us that it should be available at http://www.microcenter.com soon at a price of $29.99 (UPDATE: The flashlight can indeed now be bought at Microcenter). This is a good competitive price when we compare it to other LED and rechargeable LED flashlights. Hopefully HIS can get it out to more stores soon.
